Shaun of the Dead

Film: Shaun of the Dead
Director: Edgar Wright
Written by: Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright

Rating: 5/5 Unicorns
Every once a well there is a film that reminds you why you love movies. I will be the first to admit that Shaun of the Dead has its moments of cheese but it suites the film so well. This film is probably the best zombie movie besides 28 Days Later(which is a different type of zombie film). It is hilarious and despite its ridiculousness of the situation really real. It has a human quality to it, you feel like you are watching an account of how people would handle a zombie Apocalypse. There would  be no concrete plan, total chaos, humor, tears and fear along the ride. I never stopped laughing. The moment where Shaun went to check out the situation in front of the Winchester  is probably the funniest part of the film. It is a film that really belongs in ones DVD collection. Not even 10 minutes into the film I was asking myself where have you been my whole life?  I know that this film will probably not be everyone's cup of tea but urge everyone to check it out. The sense of humor in the film is similar to another one of my favorites Hot Fuzz which is another Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg vehicle.

The Twlight Saga: Eclipse

I am the biggest sci-fi/ fantasy/horror fan you will find. Dragons, Aliens, Fairies, Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, Hobbits, Mermaids and Unicorns were all I could talk about growing up. When it comes to films there is nothing I love more than watching a great adventure unfold. If a film  manages to mix thrills, laughs  and great effects I am completely sold. Being a big fan of vampires and werewolves I am always thrilled whenever I get the opportunity to see them come alive in front of my eyes. I am never a fan when people start to change what we know is true about my beloved creatures. For instance, Vampires do not shine in the light or break off like glass when killed. Who came up with that? Oh yes, Stephanie Meyer. Since I got that rant out of my way I am now going to critique the latest offering from the Twilight Saga. I know most people are thinking this movie came out last year why I am writing a review now. Well I have only watched it today, so the review will be fresh on my mind. I have shied away from watching Eclipse because the previous two were not of high caliber. I absolutely hated Twilight. I did enjoy New Moon but mostly because Taylor Lautner was topless for most of it. Lets get on with Eclipse. I was entertained for the two hours that it was on, so that was a plus. The writing was not horrendous but predictable. I found myself completing sentences for the characters, yes it was that predictable. The special effects were still a little off for me. The whole running super fast thing had me in tears. With all the success that the Twilight Saga  has had you think they would invest more in the special effects department. I felt like the pacing was good. Characters development was decent and so was the score. The acting was not terrible but not brilliant either. The actors did well with what was given to them. The biggest bone I have with the film was relationship between Bella and Edward. I don't know how much is the film fault but I suspect it has more to do with how their relationship was written in the books. Edward is a stalker, emotionally abusive and possessive boyfriend. Their relationship is one of the most toxic things I have ever seen. Her entire existence is based on Edward, I was a teenage girl once so I know how intense feelings can be. It is a reason why they call it puppy love. He could never let her  make her own decisions. I don't want you going to see Jacob. Take a chill pill.  Lets see what else did I enjoy or loathe in the film. I did like the werewolves even though they could have come across more real on film( once again special effects get it together). The makeup has come a long way from Twilight( thank god). On a superficial part, I really have to give it up to the hair department,  Bella's hair was on point throughout the film. As  I recall she was wearing a wig, so kudos to them. There were more topless Jacob scenes which are always nice and unnecessary at the same time. At the end of the day I prefer my vampires to be ruthless a la Anne Rice or True Blood.  The film was overall entertaining. It was far from perfect but it was not the worst thing I have ever seen. In my humble opinion this is a perfect film for the little 13 year old girl and 13 year old girls at hearts.

X-Men: First Class

I grew up on X-men. Sure Spiderman, Superman and Batman are amazing superheroes but there do not hold a torch to my X-men. When the first film adaption of X-Men was released in 2000 it was a dream come true. My pre-teen heart was full of glee. I recall exiting the theater thinking it was the best film I had ever seen. Keep in mind this was shortly before The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was released or I became acquainted with classics like Shawshank Redemption. Fast forward to 2003 when the sequel came out, X-men had me under their spell. I was disappointed with X-men: The Last Stand, it do not compare to the previous films. It felt rushed and there character inconsistency. When X-men Origins: Wolverine came out my love of the X-Men had diminished.  Do not get me wrong I loved seeing Wolverine in all his glory but the spark of the films had died. When X-Men: First Class was being filmed my excitement was non-existent. I was happy that James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult got a role in the films, since they are actors that I love. Last few weeks before the film was released I found my excitement building. I was hearing wonderful things about the film that made me reconsider the franchise. So during the opening night  I made my way to the cinema. Within two minutes of the film, I was in love. This is not much of a spoiler but the first few minutes were exactly the same as the first X-men. I felt like it was a nudge to fans and I took it hook line and sinker. The entire film was well paced and the character development was superb. There is a good balance between dialogue and action. There are two cameos that will make the fans extremely happy. I have already fallen in love Matthew Vaughn since Kick-Ass but this film reaffirmed my love for him. He is an amazing director and I can see his career going to amazing lengths. Pretty much the entire cast had amazing chemistry, which made the film more enjoyable. My favorite scene from the movie took place at a bar in Argentina. All I will reveal is that Erik/Magneto puts the bad in badass. For some reason I did not know Kevin Bacon was in the film. He had an amazing role in the film, it is always interesting to see him playing the villain. For all the fangirls in the world, this film has an epic bromance between Charles and Erik. I think it rivals Kirk and Spock, Sherlock and Dr. Watson. I would recommend that you run to go see this film. Trust me when I say it is worth the ticket price.

Welcome

There is one thing you should know about me, films are my greatest love. When I watch a film it is a sacred moment. Not sacred in the religious sense but a moment so precise, so pure, so magical that there is not better word to describe it. If I got paid to watch movies I would be wealthy. A month never goes by without me blogging or tweeting about some marvelous film I have watched. I always feel as if no one but me shares the kind of enthusiasm I have for films. That is why I created this blog. I wanted to create a space where I could discuss films that I love, films that provoked me or films that disappoint me. This blog will allow my other blogs to breathe from all constant talk about films. I can't wait to share my love with films with the web universe.
